Baking cookies is one of the activities in the kitchen that brings back so many memories for people, whether it’s making Christmas cookies or your grandmother’s traditional chocolate chip recipe.
“We feel joy, we feel love, and we remember the people special to us when we think of cookies.” shared Alecia.
Leading up to our Yarn Bombing installation day that took place June 16th, Café coordinator Ashley Tavares and Alecia decorated seven dozen “I love you” ASL shaped cookies, all dipped in Sensity branded colours. These cookies also included the hashtag #NDBAM for Deafblind Awareness month.
“We are in the midst of creating our café work experience program that eliminates barriers and promotes individualized success in the food industry for our future candidates. We are going to be offering a specialized teaching program that really focuses on their preferred mode of communication, developing transferable skills in food service and introduces the world of flavour to our individuals. We hope to increase awareness of proper nutrition while offering an accessible approach to independence in the kitchen. “shared Ashley.
The “I love you” cookies are something the café is hoping to master and have for sale. They were baked prior to Alecia’s visit.
“She made the icing from scratch, colored the icing incorporating the colors that resemble those of our logo here at Sensity and she dipped seven dozen cookies independently. Alecia was just as bright and engaging as the color of the cookies. We had a blast” said Ashley.
Café on Main is located inside Sensity and is currently in the development stages.
With the generous funding provided by the Lions Home for the Deaf, Paris Lions Club and the Lioness Club, the first phase of revitalizing the café space was completed in Fall 2019.
