Having Good Thymes in the Garden

By June 29, 2021 No Comments

Our herb wall is growing again.

Special projects intervenor Katrina organized a planting day and recruited volunteers to look after watering the vertical garden feature found in our sensory garden.

Jordan was the first person to break ground on the project. He and intervenor Stephanie planted lavender.

“One, two, three, four, five, six – good job,” Stephanie said, counting each plant with Jordan.

“More plants,” she asked.

After Jordan signed more they made it a lucky seven plants.

Ingrid enjoyed smelling and planting the lavender

“You have to make it nice and safe in there,” said intervenor Kim as she and Ingrid used a small spade to dig a hole for the plant.

“What do you think, does that feel enough,” said Kim and they used their hands to check the depth of the hole.

“When you come to the sensory garden and sit on the swing you can smell all the lavender,” Kim said to Ingrid.

Nicholas, working with intervenor Diana, chose summer savory to plant. They also watered the plants together.

Other volunteer planters included Alecia, Allison, Dan, Dorell and Luca.

The herb garden will be looked after seven days a week.

We look forward to a bounty of fresh herbs.

We are grateful to Equal Ground Community Gardens and chair Cheryl Didtrek Antoski for donating the herbs, which included summer savory, stevia, lavender, hot and spicy oregano, Italian parsley, French tarragon, curly leaf parsley, sage, basic, thyme, marjoram and Siam queen.
