Our Stories – Ruth

Sensity is very proud of Ruth Perez. Ruth, an Intervenor based in London, recently gave an important presentation at this year’s World Conference of Deafblind International (DbI) in Bucharest, Romania.

Here is what Ruth has to say about her presentation: “The same technology that surrounds us can be used in a way that makes a positive and substantial difference for many individuals with disabilities, including deafblindness.”

"The same technology that surrounds us can be used in a way that makes a positive and substantial difference for many individuals with disabilities, including deafblindness."

A tablet, for instance, with the appropriate apps can be used to help deafblind people communicate, learn new skills, and enjoy while learning.

In this practice, it is easy to see that this individual using an iPad is more motivated to fully participate in the cooking process, is better able to use his skills in order to control each step of the process, and has fun during this activity. This practice confirms that it is essential and practical to find ways to use the very same devices we play with every day to make the life of deafblind individuals easier.

The case presented is just one example of how this goal can be achieved. “The only limit in the way we can use technology is our imagination!”
