Sensity and LAMP: Building Community Connections Through Shared Learning

Building more inclusive communities starts with understanding, practical skills and opportunities to learn. Through our Learning and Development department, we share decades of specialized knowledge and practical experience in deafblindness, sensory loss, communication and Intervenor services with families, professionals, community organizations and partners across Canada.

Our collaboration with LAMP Community Health Centre in Etobicoke brought this expertise into the community through Intervenor and Sighted Guide training, creating opportunities to share knowledge, exchange perspectives and build understanding.

The training was facilitated by Cullen Drew,Learning & Development Specialist, and marked his first time delivering training in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

LAMP is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides primary care, health promotion, illness prevention and other community services. Boris Nwachukwu, Program Manager, and the LAMP team supported the coordination of the training.

Throughout the sessions, participants contributed thoughtful questions, meaningful discussions and perspectives shaped by their own experiences. Their engagement helped create an interactive learning environment where participants could learn from the training and from one another.

Reflecting on the experience, Cullen highlighted the value of these conversations:

“The thoughtful questions, meaningful discussions and insightful conversations made the sessions interactive, enriching and enjoyable. I appreciated everyone’s openness and willingness to share their perspectives and experiences.” Cullen Drew, Learning & Development Specialist.

Sharing our knowledge beyond our own workforce is an important part of our commitment to building understanding and strengthening community capacity.

Through our Learning and Development work, we help professionals, organizations and community groups develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of deafblindness, sensory loss and communication. These opportunities allow participants to ask questions, explore new approaches and consider how their learning can inform their own work and interactions.

For us, this work is about more than delivering training. It is about creating opportunities for learning that can contribute to more accessible and inclusive environments where people who are deafblind can communicate, participate and connect.

Our collaboration with LAMP reflects the value of organizations coming together to share knowledge and learn from one another. Cullen expressed interest in exploring future opportunities to work with LAMP, exchange knowledge and continue making a positive impact together.

We welcome opportunities to connect with organizations, professionals and community groups interested in learning more about deafblindness, sensory loss, communication and accessibility.

Through our Learning and Development department, we work to make our knowledge and experience accessible to the wider community, helping build understanding, strengthen skills and support a more inclusive world for people who are deafblind.
